The Burlington Police Department is accepting applications for a patrol position.
The patrol position conducts proactive patrols of residential and business areas of the city. Responds to radio calls for service regarding misdemeanor and felony complaints, emergency situations, citizen and guest complaints, traffic accidents, as well as numerous other calls for service. The officer conducts criminal investigations; arrests, books and processes felony and misdemeanor suspects and prisoners. Prepares and submits reports and associated documents. Testifies in court and upon request acts as an advisory witness to the District Attorney during felony case prosecutions. Could perform duties as a Field Training Officer for recruit or trainee officers.
The Patrol Officer provides traffic control; conducts traffic enforcement; issues citations, serves summons, applies for and executes arrest warrants. Assists and cooperates with various criminal justice agencies. Promotes community relations; accords fair, impartial and equal treatment in a respectful, courteous, nondiscrimination manner to all citizens. Performs other duties as assigned. Familiarity of directives, mission statement, and vision statement.
The Police Officer is accountable to the Police Sergeant, Police Corporal, and Chief of Police.
SKILLS: Evidence collection and handling; reporting writing; public relations; firearms; driving; written and verbal communications; interpersonal relations; leadership; observation; self-defense; operation of intoxilyzer, radar, cameras, radar guns and other issued/available equipment.
MENTAL DEMANDS: Routine and non-routine duties; decision making; follow policies, regulations and procedures as outlined; attention to details; learn and assimilate new techniques; knowledge and proper application of local, state and federal laws; knowledge of arrest, search and seizure laws and rules of evidence; knowledge of interrogation and interview techniques.

EXPERIENCE: No minimum experience required for entry level positions.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION: High School graduate or the equivalent plus some college level studies OR IN LIEU THEREOF an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:Potentially violent and dangerous; stressful; may spend numerous hours in a vehicle; possible exposure to inclement weather and hazardous incidents; subject to verbal and physical abuse; combative situations. Shift work is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Excellent physical condition; standing manual dexterity; manipulating; good hearing and eyesight.

Pay negotiable based on experience.
