City of Harrisonburg Police Officer Testing & Employment Opportunities

The Harrisonburg Police Department has combined the testing registration and employment opportunities into one advertisement. Candidates interested in becoming a Police Officer with the HPD must apply to this posting, even if they possess a valid testing certificate. Candidates will not be considered for vacant Police Officer opportunities if they do not apply to this posting.

The City of Harrisonburg is currently applications for individuals interested in joining HPD, which offers an entire salary range of $18.53 - $31.15 per hour (equivalent to $38,542 - $64,792 annually), commensurate with training and experience, plus an excellent benefits package. To be considered, you must meet the minimum requirements of the position (as stated below), including a valid Harrisonburg Police Department Police Officer Testing Certificate. ++Police Officer Testing++

The City of Harrisonburg will be offering Police Officer testing on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Minimum Requirements for Police Officer:

  • High School Diploma or GED. College Degree or Military Experience, preferred.
  • 21 years of age by completion of basic law enforcement academy.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien with an application for Naturalization filed and pending with Immigration Services, if DCJS-approved.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable record per City policy.
  • Able to work 12-hour shift (6am - 6pm, 6pm - 6am, or 3pm - 3am).
  • Good physical condition.
  • Must live or be willing to move within a one (1) hour drive of Harrisonburg, VA.

Registration Process:

  1. Registration is required for testing and can be completed online by visiting the City's website: https://www.harrisonburgva.gov/employment. All registration applications must be received through the City of Harrisonburg Human Resources Department's online application system no later than 5:00pm EST on Friday, February 28, 2020. The online application system will automatically end registration at the indicated deadline, even if applicants are in the registration process. Late registrations will not be accepted.
  2. After your registration has been received and reviewed by Human Resources, you will receive an email notification instructing you to complete two additional documents, entitled "Personal History Statement" and "Authorization of Release of Personal Information." Applicants must complete the documents and submit them to Human Resources by 5:00pm EST on Monday, March 9, 2020.
  3. Applicant responses for the "Personal History Statement" will be reviewed by the Harrisonburg Police Department's Professional Standards Division. Candidates will be notified by 5:00pm EST on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 if they pass or fail the pre-screen review. Candidates who pass the pre-screen review will be formally invited via email to the testing on Saturday, March 14, 2020.
  4. Applicants who do not submit the completed documents by the deadline will not be allowed entry to the testing facility on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

Applicants currently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), the Federal Government or another state are exempt from the written test. Certified Officers will receive further communication from Cpl. Chris Watson regarding the time of their scheduled physical ability test on Saturday, March 14, 2020. Certified Officers must bring current Law Enforcement Officer credentials to check-in.

The following provides information related to the testing process, scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2020.

Written Test

  • The written test will be given at the Harrisonburg Police Department located at 101 N. Main Street, 2nd Floor, Harrisonburg, VA.
  • Check-in for testing begins at 0800 hours EST.
  • Please bring a valid picture ID for proper identification (Ex: Driver's License, passport, etc.).
  • The testing will begin promptly at 0830 hours EST.
  • It will take approximately 2 1/2 hours to complete.
  • No one will be admitted to the test after the starting time.

Physical Ability Test

  • The test will be given on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the National Guard Armory located at 340 S. Willow St, Harrisonburg, VA.
  • Candidates taking the written test will proceed immediately to the physical ability test if they receive a passing grade on the written test.
  • Certified officers will be contacted individually to schedule their physical ability test time.
  • To participate in the testing, you must complete a Waiver of Claim for Injury form (provided at testing).

To be eligible for an open position with the Harrisonburg Police Department, you must complete and pass the written test (waived for current VA Certified Officers) and physical ability test. Upon successful completion of the testing, you will receive an original certificate indicating eligibility to be considered. The written test and physical ability certificate will be valid for one year from testing date. As openings occur, the Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) will advertise the position and accept applications. Candidates who pass the March 14, 2020 testing process will automatically be considered for this recruitment process. To be considered for future recruitment processes, you ++must++ submit an online application and valid Police Officer Testing Certificate as the opportunities are posted on our website.

Physical Requirements: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Special Requirements: Successful applicants for this position will be subject to a DMV Motor Vehicle check and must complete a satisfactory credit history review, drug screening, physical, psychological evaluation, polygraph and criminal background investigation.

The following documents are some examples of what will be required at a later phase in the process: Social Security Card, Driver's License, Passport, Birth Certificate, Marriage/Divorce Documents, DD214, Sealed College Transcripts and High School Diploma. These documents are not required at the time of the Personal History Statement submission. When the applicable documents are requested by the Harrisonburg Police Department, you will be expected to provide them.

Deadline Reminders:

  • Candidates must submit a complete online application by 5:00pm EST on Friday, February 28, 2020. All required fields must be completed, to include work experience and education history. A resume does not replace required fields.
