Video: Suspect pretending to be bystander opens fire on Ga. cop

Stephen Frank Nichols pretended to help look for the fleeing suspect with the officer

By PoliceOne Staff

AUBURN, Ga. — Police released dash cam footage of an interaction between a sergeant and a fleeing domestic disturbance suspect who opened fire on the officer.

When Officer Billy Willis responded to the call, a woman at the home told him the suspect fled into the woods, Athens Banner-Herald reported. Sgt. Jeff Scott arrived and began searching for the suspect.

Scott discovered a man, Stephen Frank Nichols, standing outside a home who claimed he was looking for a man who ran across the yard. Scott can be heard asking which way the man went when Nichols pulled a gun and began firing.

Police told WXIA Scott returned fire, wounding Nichols. Nichols is currently listed in serious condition at a local hospital. Scott was not injured.

An investigation is ongoing.
