PROVO, Utah — A fleeing fugitive took a wrong turn and ended up in police custody after running into a K-9 and SWAT training exercise.

DOC PIO Maria Peterson told ABC4 that Derreke Nelson, 39, failed to appear for a scheduled check-in with his probation officer on Feb. 22.

Adult Probation and Parole officials recognized Nelson’s car Thursday and attempted to pull over the vehicle. Nelson and two other passengers fled the scene on foot.

Provo police aided probation and parole officials in the search for the suspects.

“It helps when fugitives run right into a crowd of 30 SWAT officers and three K9 units who just happen to be training in the area,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Nelson was on parole for charges relating to theft, forgery, and possession of a forgery device. One other suspect was also detained after triggering a soft lockdown at a local elementary school.
