RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A five-hour standoff Wednesday morning in Highland involved a 38-year-old parolee with a gun who refused to come out of his ex-girlfriend's home — though he eventually released her 3-year-old daughter — until a SWAT team fired tear gas into the building, sheriff's officials say.

Gonzalo Hernandez climbed out a window and was taken into custody Wednesday morning on Peacock Avenue. No one was hurt.
