P1 Interactive: How is your department using mobile computing?

A recent PoliceOne survey shows that there is a prevailing belief among police officers and agency administrators alike: deploying a mobile computing solution is a top priority.

In May 2009, we asked our members to participate in the PoliceOne Wireless Networks Survey. This survey was completed by a random sampling of law enforcement professionals throughout the month. Among the myriad law enforcement professionals who responded, nearly half were upper level management and decision makers, the remainder of respondents were patrol officers.

A significant number of respondents indicated that they already have a wireless network deployed, and are using solutions to increase efficiency of daily operations, reduce response times, and enhance public safety services in communities both big and small. Among those that do not have a solution in place, a full one third of respondents say they have plans to implement a wireless network in this in the next 12-13 months.

For those agencies that have already deployed a wireless network, the business case for its purchase is clear: the ability to use e-mail, “locationing,” video surveillance, and other mobile applications enables police agencies to work more effectively. This is a clear indication of the widely-understood value that the deployment of mobile computing solutions can bring to public safety agencies.

We are still looking at the results and will post a complete update in coming weeks, but in the meantime we want to know what YOU are using mobile computing for during your shift.

What do you think? We want to hear from you so add your comments to the conversation.
