Ohio House approves change in requirements to become cop

Some changes include boosting hour requirements and a high school diploma

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio would boost the amount of training to become a police officer and require all candidates for law enforcement jobs to have a high school diploma under a legislative proposal.

The measures follow recommendations for upgrading police training and standards that emerged from committees convened by Attorney General Mike DeWine and Gov. John Kasich in the wake of protests over fatal police shootings.

The Ohio House approved a bill Wednesday containing both proposals.

The legislation would lift the current cap of 650 required hours, a move allowing the state’s police training commission to set a higher level yet to be determined.

The Fraternal Order of Police backed both provisions, while noting that practically all Ohio officers already have a high school diploma or equivalent.
