Virtual firearms training core element in today’s firearms training curriculum

Meggitt Training Systems demonstrates FATS® L7 at 2014 ILEETA Conference

Suwanee, GA – For the sixth year, Meggitt Training Systems, makers of FATS® and Caswell technologies, will be working with more than 1000 members of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) discussing firearms training and evolving training curricula as technological advancements continue to allow for more valuable training tools.

ILEETA members will gather for their annual international training conference and expo March 24-29 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. As part of the conference and expo, Meggitt is providing hands-on demonstration of its FATS® L7 compact virtual firearms training simulator.

Law enforcement training is one of the most critical elements in officer safety and survivability. Today’s challenge for departments is how to effectively and efficiently train so that communities are as safe as they can be and officers are prepared to operate safely and go home at the end of their shifts. A component of the solution is technology.

A gifted trainer, a solid curriculum, and the right tools lead to better officers and safer communities. Technological advancements are allowing for higher quality and cost effective training solutions. Meggitt’s FATS® L7 is an example of this core training shift. Virtual marksmanship trainers and use-of-force scenarios are not new, but the system capabilities and training data available through the FATS L7 and Meggitt’s BlueFire® wireless weapon simulators are changing the way law enforcement curriculums are being written.

From marksmanship remediation and qualification to use-of-force training, today’s firearms instructors and trainers need to maximize time and resources. A combined firearms training program allows trainers to fine tune skills in a cost effective, non-lethal environment before ever stepping foot on a live fire range. Simulation is not a substitute for live fire, but is a force multiplier and an effective way to maximize the training experience.

“Instructors have the opportunity to train students on proper use of verbal commands, control tactics, impact strikes, chemical tools, less lethal options and deadly force, covering the entire use of force policy and reinforcing what officers learned in the academy classroom and practical exercises. Simulation allows the instructor to repeat training exercises in a low cost, time efficient manner while replay and look back functions provide an additional level of debriefing benefit,’ said Winn Hines, Director of Law Enforcement Virtual Systems for Meggitt Training Systems.

‘By incorporating the officer’s existing knowledge, skills, abilities and experience with new technology, instructors are able to teach, practice, test and remediate in an immersive learning environment. Additionally, the instructor is able to thoroughly evaluate each student on use of force training decisions and department policy, with a focus on why the officer used force as well as analyzing the effectiveness of the force implementation.”

With funding resources like PoliceGrantsHelp.com/Meggitt-Training-Systems‎, agencies are able to identify open grants and receive grant application assistance to help in securing virtual and live fire training systems.
