Okla. county sheriff says local police not ‘too militarized’

The sheriff said armored vehicles helped save officers lives after a 16-hour standoff in Yukon

OKLAHOMA — In Norman, many people turned out to protest against a new BearCat armored vehicle. That’s still being decided.

But, here in Oklahoma County, the sheriff said it helped save officers lives after a 16-hour standoff in Yukon.

“The officers inside were perfectly safe because of the way this vehicle was constructed and also because of the defensive nature of this vehicle, it also did required law enforcement to return fire,” Sheriff John Whetsel said.
