CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A North Carolina cop is being praised for going above and beyond to help an elderly veteran whose wallet was stolen.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Andrew Spottswood recently encountered an elderly man who was taken advantage of after a woman stole his wallet, WJZY reported. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a Facebook post that the man lost his money, debit card, ID and bus pass, leaving him nowhere to go.
Spottswood decided to step in.
The officer took the 75-year-old man to the DMV for a new ID, took him to the bank for a new debit card and then got him a new bus pass. Lastly, Spottswood bought the exhausted and hungry veteran a hot meal.
“It was an opportunity to show compassion. That man doesn’t know me, doesn’t know my partner, just sees me in blue. It was a wonderful opportunity, and I’m really glad to have helped him with his problem during his storm,” Spottswood said.
The department didn’t find out about the officer’s act of kindness until the elderly man called and spoke to a supervisor. The department said Spottswood was recognized with a CMPD Acts of Excellence award.
Spottswood said he was touched by the man’s predicament because is also a veteran.
