INDIANAPOLIS — Two Indiana officers were recognized after going above and beyond for a struggling elderly couple.
Last week, Officer Disney and Officer Hayden were called to a home by Bill Haines and his wife, who called police because they were running out of food to eat, WTHR reports. While en route to the home, the officers were informed by dispatchers that the couple had to eat dog food because there was nothing else to eat at home.
When the officers arrived at the Haines couple’s home and saw their nearly empty fridge, they knew they had to help.
“I noticed that the only means of cooking they had was a microwave, some butter dishes and some plastic forks. Also, they had no more food. They did have a couple of canned goods, but they didn’t even have a can opener,” Disney said.
The officers went to a Family Dollar store and bought food along with utensils and pots and pans with their own money. Bill, a triple bypass patient, said his family fell on hard times, and that he thanks the officers “from the bottom of my heart and my wife’s heart.”
On Monday, the officers were named “Officers of the Month” and received a small gift in recognition of their actions.
Bill said he plans to pay forward the officers’ kindness.
