COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio police officer is being recognized for going above and beyond for one elderly woman.
On May 6, a 96-year-old woman named Thelma called police to help with her broken door, WCMH reported. Columbus Officer Adam Hardwick responded to the call and fixed the elderly woman’s door by adjusting the striker plate.
Hardwick decided to help Thelma by doing some odd jobs for her including labeling her keys so she’d know which one belonged to which door. During his visit with Thelma, the officer learned the woman recently had a birthday but nobody got her a cake.
Thelma told Hardwick that she outlived all of her family, including her children. The officer stepped in and made sure she had a cake for her birthday.

“I kept thinking about it because she said she had not gotten any cake. Nobody had stopped by and seen her,” Hardwick told WCMH.
The next day, Hardwick bought Thelma a cake and brought it to her home along with Officer Mel Romans. The officers said Thelma was happy about the cake and let them know chocolate was her favorite kind.
“It was so sweet, it just made me feel so good,” Thelma said. “Somebody cares for me, I didn’t think anybody cared, because I feel so alone, I lost my husband many years ago.”
Lt. Rob Sagle praised the officer’s act of kindness on Facebook, saying that the officer “displays his pride for the neighborhood he patrols.”
“His hard work and enthusiasm was displayed on this run and every run he encounters,” Sagle wrote. “I would like to recognize him for going the extra mile for Thelma. Thanks Officer Hardwick for all you do for the citizens of Columbus!”
