Video: Fla. officer saves fallen flag from middle of road after Irma

“Even in the midst of a storm, we are reminded of the love for our country and community”

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — While out patrolling the streets after Hurricane Irma on Monday, a group of first responders noticed something tattered in the middle of the road.

As the armored car full of first responders pulled up, Officer Joseph Schiavo noticed it was a fallen American flag, ABC News reported. They collectively decided to stop and pick it up.

“I just thought at the moment that it would be a disgrace to let that lay on the ground,” Schiavo said.

Video posted by the Coral Springs Police Department on social media shows Schiavo running out into the rain to pick up the flag. He waves it in the winds and then heads back to the vehicle. The department captioned it, “Even in the midst of a storm, we are reminded of the love for our country and community. #HurricaneIrma #September11.”

Schiavo said he did it because “it felt like an honorable thing to do.”
