KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus police are set to begin registering employees who wish to carry concealed handguns on campus when a new law goes into effect July 1.

The caveats in the law mean employees must navigate a number of circumstances where concealed carry is not permitted. Violators face penalties that could include termination.

UT Knoxville Police Chief Troy Lane held a news conference Thursday to discuss the policy, which was sent in an email to faculty and staff earlier in the day. He said he already is getting questions about the various exceptions.

Lane said, “We’re going to have to feel through this process for the next several months.”
