Officer makes history as NYPD's first female counter-sniper

She credits her success as the department’s first female counter-sniper to her unit and her husband's support

NEW YORK — Five-foot, one-inch Det. Tina Guerrero has never let her size or gender hold her back from fulfilling her dream as a counter-sniper in the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit.

"It's like a big boy's playground and I wanted to play in it. I was welcomed with open arms," Guerrero told Fox 5. "I've always been treated with the utmost respect."

After having her first child, Guerrero became a police officer with the NYPD. She worked with Vice undercover, but wanted to join the Emergency Service Unit.

ESU handles tasks ranging from hostage situations to presidential details, Fox 5 reported.

Guerrero carries all her own gear, constantly trains at the firing range and has never had to use her service weapon or rifle while on duty. She credits her success as the department’s first female counter-sniper to her unit and her husband, an ESU officer in a different command.

"There's always someone willing to teach you something, always somebody there to answer questions for you," Guerrero said. "As long as you're willing to do the job here and go out there and work, you aren't going to have any problems."

Hi Facebook family! Meet this real life hero (shero) at 10:30p on #FOX5... Det Tina Guerrero is the NYPD's only female counter-sniper in the elite ESU. She's also a mother of 3 & married to another detective. Incredible story! LESMA NYPD FOX 5 / Fox5NY.com
