WEST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A state police trooper from Luzerne County was shot when confronted by a man outside a residence in West Hanover Township in Dauphin County Sunday night.

Arrest papers for David Ricker, 49, identified the trooper as Michael Trotta, originally from Exeter.

Trotta, son of former Pittston Township police chief Len Trotta, was shot multiple times and was transported to Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, said Trooper Robert Hicks.

Online reports say Trotta was listed in stable condition Monday morning.

Ricker was arraigned Monday morning on charges of criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault. Bail was set at $1 million.

Ricker suffered a gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

According to the criminal complaint:
Trotta was investigating a hit and run crash on Greenhill Road in West Hanover Township, just outside Harrisburg, at about 6:30 p.m.

A residence of Greenhill Road advised Trotta that the suspected vehicle had gone up the road. Trotta found the vehicle parked in a driveway in front of Ricker's residence.

Ricker barricaded himself in a garage and yelled, "Get the (expletive) off my property," the complaint says.

A second trooper assisted Trotta, who approached the garage and was struck multiple times, Hicks said.

Trotta was driven away from the scene by a state police corporal and other troopers retreated, setting up a perimeter around the house.

More gunfire was heard as a member of the state police SERT team found Ricker on the garage floor with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, the complaint says.

State police said a SKS rifle and two handguns were found in the garage.

Trotta graduated from the Lackawanna College Police Academy in July 2010, and graduated from the State Police Academy in April 2011. He is assigned to Troop H, Harrisburg.
