DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — A Broward Sheriff’s deputy on his way to a domestic violence dispute was killed after colliding with a pickup about 3 a.m. Sunday in Deerfield Beach.
“This morning our hearts are heavy,” the agency said in a post on social media. "The Broward Sheriff’s Office family is grieving the loss of a BSO deputy who died after being involved in an on-duty crash early Sunday morning. We ask for thoughts and prayers.”
The agency tweeted a photo showing dozens of deputies lined up outside the hospital to salute a flag-draped casket.
Officials have not yet released the names of the deputy or the driver of the pickup.
Shortly after 3 a.m., two deputies in separate marked vehicles were heading south on Military Trail approaching the Southwest 10th Street intersection, agency spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.
As the first deputy made his way through the intersection, he collided with a Toyota Tundra heading east on Southwest 10th Street.
The second deputy witnessed the crash and immediately called for help.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews transported both men to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach.
The deputy was declared dead at the hospital, Coleman-Wright said.
The driver of the pickup is in stable condition and expected to survive.
Traffic homicide detectives began investigating the crash immediately after it happened, Coleman-Wright said.
The investigation snarled traffic along both 10th Street and Military Trail for hours on Sunday.
It is still too soon to say whether alcohol or speed might have been factors in the crash, Coleman-Wright said.
Traffic homicide detectives will continue to investigate the cause of the collision. The investigation is expected to take several weeks.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash and has any information regarding the accident is urged to contact Detective Carlos De Jesus at 954-321-4842.
